Congress Welcomes INLA Decommissioning

8 Feb 2010

Both the President and General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions today (February 8) welcomed the announcement from the INLA that it has decommissioned its weapons and is fully committed to pursuing its objectives through peaceful means.

Congress President Jack O'Connor said: "This is another welcome step in building the peace and securing a better future for the people of Northern Ireland. Genuine social and economic progress can only be built in a climate of security and stability. We now face the task of enhancing the lives and building a new future for working people in Northern Ireland and across the island of Ireland.

Congress General Secretary David Begg said that today's developments were "testament to the strong and constructive role played by the trade union movement over the course of the conflict. We must now harness that strength to the task of building a better society for all."
